We’re thrilled to highlight the bold, emotive lighting design crafted by Aaron Dootson for the UK amateur premiere of Les Misérables, recently staged at the Liverpool Empire.
Faced with the ambitious task of illuminating one of the world’s most iconic musicals, Aaron brought creative ingenuity to the fore—maximizing available resources to deliver a visually arresting production. His use of light added depth and drama to every scene, amplifying the emotional resonance of the story and characters. Through strategic equipment choices and a well-planned lighting rig, Aaron turned technical challenges into artistic triumphs.
PRG was proud to provide a customized lighting package and ongoing technical support throughout the production. Having collaborated with Aaron for nearly two years, we remain committed to empowering emerging lighting designers as they shape the future of theatre.
Special credit goes to the entire creative and production team, including Associate Lighting Designer Nathan Storm, Production Electrician James Smellie, Director & Designer James Lacey-Kiggins, Associate Designer Holly Speakman, and Head of Productions Chris Simmons. Their combined talents helped bring this landmark show to life with a fresh new vision.
This remarkable staging was part of the Let The People Sing! initiative, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Les Misérables. The production was made possible through the collaboration of BOST Musicals, Liverpool Empire Creative Learning, Romiley Operatic Society, and Tip Top Theatre.
